Black★Rock Shooter OVA

10/11/2010

A bit late on this one, but I have finally had time to catch up and watch some anime. This was on the top of my list. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time now!

I really enjoyed the OVA. It’s about an hour long. The animation is stylish and enjoyable. The music is fitting. The story is interesting. And the characters, whether in the other world or the real world, are pretty damn awesome.

The story is loosely (I can take the liberty to use that term here, right?) based on, or better yet, inspired by, the original Black Rock Shooter vocaloid video. Which I posted below. :)

Each of the main characters has a real self and an another world self. They look very similar to each other, but personalities aren’t always the same. The characters in the real world are in junior high. Other than that, not much else is known.
The main characters are (other world/real world):

  • Black Rock Shooter/Mato Kuroi: The main character. Befriends Yomi in the real world. She is very sweet and caring. Mato and Yomi are in the same class the first year of junior high. Mato joins the basketball club and eventually befriends Yuu. In the very beginning BRS is damaged by Black Gold Saw. After this, all of the other world scenes are shown with BRS fighting Dead Master.
  • Dead Master/Yomi Takanashi: Yomi befriends Mato in the very beginning. Mato encourages Yomi to join a club, so she joins the volleyball club. They become best friends. Second year of junior though, they are no longer in the same class. Yomi then disappears, and this is around the time when Yuu and Mato become closer friends. Throughout the entire OVA, Dead Master is found fighting against BRS.
  • STR, STRength/Yuu: The manager of the basketball club, this is how she meets Mato. Her other world self is only briefly shown, but never once shown fighting like the other two.
  • Black★Gold Saw: Only appeared in the very beginning, battling against Miku. Nothing is mentioned about her the rest of the OVA.

  • Here is the trailer for the OVA featuring the BRS song.

Here is the original Miku "Black Rock Shooter" music video. One of my personal favorites.

Okay, prepare for too many screens.

As read in every single review of BRS, there is definitely room for a sequel to be produced. Actually, there is a lot of room. A lot of plot holes are apparent in this OVA, a lot of characters are introduced, and it ends with a cliff hanger.

I would really love to see a sequel. This is definitely an enjoyable OVA and only adds to the BRS franchise (if you can call it that?).

I’d love to see a sequel too. I think this sets up for a very potent full series.
Anyways, agreed that almost all the scenes are done beautifully. That’s really one of the strengths of this OVA.

The artwork is what stands out the most in the BRS OVA, which makes for a very pleasant viewing experience.
