Pictures of Winooski, Vermont – May 11, 2011

Tree in Winooski, Vermont

I recently moved in to my first apartment in Winooski, Vermont. It’s nice inside, but the past part about the apartment is about 100 yards away. I am right across from the Winooski River! It’s really pretty. What I thought was a nice day to take pictures, may not have been. The pictures are so cloudy! D: Still happy with the turnout though. Vermont is a very beautiful state, when it’s not raining!

Tips for Incoming College Freshmen – How to Survive & Succeed

04/26/2011

It is really hard to believe that an entire year has passed (almost!) since high school ended and college was about to begin. Everyone, I mean everyone, always says how time flies by faster every year. Everyone says it because it is true. Every year life just gets busier, but the things I am involved in also become much more important. My first year of college has been an invaluable learning experience, but I will cover that in another post!

The purpose of this post is to help any incoming college students get ready for an entirely new “experience.” It is also to help with potential students looking at different colleges. In general I want to give insight and de-bunk some of those college myths, while also trying to give advice on how to enjoy college.

Video of the Day: “Mirai Mechanism” by vividblaze

04/08/2011

Awesome video by the band vividblaze. They make amazing music, and they have also been featured on some of Danny Choo‘s videos.

vividblaze’s music is generally just relaxing. The vocals are so impressive, along with the other aspects of their music.

After hearing some of their songs, I went online and started looking for their music. Well it turns out it is all on iTunes! This is great, I love when Japanese bands can be found on the U.S. iTunes store.

Definitely a band worth checking out and supporting.

You can find their music on iTunes here: vividblaze on iTunes
You can find this song, “Mirai Mechanism,” here: on iTunes & on Amazon

vividblaze official site (it’s Japanese) can be found here: http://www.vividblaze.com/

Nintendo 3DS Impressions

04/08/2011

I think it is worth posting that two weeks ago I got a black 3DS and Super Street Fighter IV. I picked it up the Monday after launch on a whim. I traded in my DS lite for a special promotion, which I think was worth it.

I will do a longer post and write up on it soon, but for right now some initial impressions are important.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. I think the system will grow and become even better over time. As of right now, the system is just okay. It isn’t fully featured, the friend code system still sucks, and there is a lack of interesting and quality games.

What I like about the 3DS:

  • The analog nub: feels smooth and works great.
  • The weight and size: just feels right when I hold it.
  • The impressive graphics: games look great, especially MT Framework games like SSFIV3D.
  • Street pass: possibly a selling point of the system, street pass is frankly awesome. I have a few friends and random people I have passed, and it is just really neat.

What I don’t like about the 3DS

  • The d-pad position: it cramps my hand to use the d-pad, which is never a good thing.
  • Lack of features at launch: there is no shop, there is no web browser, there is no friend chat, and there is just a lack of anything interesting to do with the system.
  • The 3D: it gives me a headache and messes with my eyes. I mean honestly, this is okay with me. 3D movies like Tron Legacy make me feel sick too, so this was expected. I just play with 3D off, it still feels gimmicky to me. However, 3D wasn’t a selling point for me on this system.
  • Lack of good launch titles: I mean really, the only title I thought worth buying was SSFIV3D. Nintendo disappointed fans with their basically lack of any worthwhile launch titles. Hopefully they give their fans what they want before E3 with Ocarina of Time 3DS and Kid Icarus.
  • The cumbersome friend code system is still in place. However, there is no longer an individual FC for each game, it is strictly system based. It is still a little of a pain to have to register a friend and have them also register you. It is non-sensical, and Nintendo should have definitely gone with a username system, it is 2011.
  • The lack of a way to communicate with friends: there is no text chat, voice chat, etc. It is impossible to communicate with people through the system. I hope this is something that gets changed, as it just seems basic and Wii like…kind of like something from 5 years ago.
  • Battery life: the battery life is pretty weak. I remember my DS lite playing for about 9 hours on some charges. The 3DS lasts about 4 with 3D turned off. This isn’t that bad, but still inconvenient.
  • Dust magnet: the 3DS just attracts fizzles like it’s its job. It is frustrating and really bothers me. I get why consoles get released glossy, for the shinny affect. However, matte is the way to go, always. ._.

I think the 3DS has a lot of potential. It is a reasonable price, looks great, handles great, and has a lot of neat features. A lot of the problems are addressable, especially as the system gets updated. I think that once more titles are released and studios figure out the right way to do 3D, the system will be amazing. There are a few titles on the horizon to look out for like Ocarina of Time 3D, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked!!, and Cave Story 3D.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D is an amazing looking port of the console versions. It plays smoothly, has online battles, and the entire roster from the console version. It is a blast to play with friends too, but it is sadly missing Japanese voice options. Some of the English VA is irritating, especially Makoto’s, who I’ve been playing mostly. Overall, I will be enjoying playing this and my backlog of DS games.

Sadly, I am currently the busiest I have ever been, in my entire life. I have only played with the 3DS about 10 hours, which is disappointing. I will definitely be sinking more time in to playing it when classes end on April 29th.

If you got a 3DS, tell me what you think. Do you agree with my points?
Also, if you want to exchange friend codes, let me know! Mine is: 3265-5071-1146
Just let me know in the comments you added me & post your FC and I will add you. :)

Holy glorious buffalo chicken dip. (via Eat Me.)

Yum! This looks delicious. I can’t wait to try it out!

I have been compiling food recipes for when I eventually have the chance to start cooking on my own, and it just so happens that this is one I am definitely going to make.

Maybe this blog will turn into an anime, video game, coding, food blog as it grows and progresses!

Holy glorious buffalo chicken dip. "CHICKEN DIP." Those two words have become an almost holy phrase amongst my closest friends — and for good reason, because chicken dip is just insanely delicious. Not for the faint of heart, as these mouthwatering shreds of meat are bursting with cheese and buffalo heat. Sound appetizing? Read on. When it came time to figure out Super Bowl plans, it was almost a given that Buffalo Chicken Dip (affectionately known as "chicken dip" or "Kelly's am … Read More

For all you nerds & non-nerds alike, here's another tasty post from my good friend Momo. Tell me I'm not the only one drooling over these photos! Even though I know Catherine LOVES this holiday, she was nice enough to let me share a recipe for Pi day. So here is a delicious Peanut Butter 3.14 to celebrate this fun holiday! This … Read More

Wind Waker Unplugged

03/10/2011

I love this video! FreddeGredde does such a great job, plus the video editing is awesome.

I recently acquired the Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker soundtracks…so nostalgic. The Zelda games really have some fantastic music.

Refocusing Peaceful Respite

02/20/2011

It has been quite a long time since I have done a real post about the different things I am interested in. Life has been very busy lately, but in a positive way. I haven’t had the time to really enjoy any anime in the past year, and it seems my focus of free time has been shifted to gaming. This might possibly be due to my major at school or the fact that a large majority of the guys in my dorm play games. I think it is a good thing, as I have made some friends and actually been playing games with them. It is a lot of fun, and it is an experience I have only ever had while playing team sports.

Playing games has been fun, doing school work has been fun, working two jobs has been fun, but I need something to do in my free time to also help me better my skills and expand my knowledge. I feel that blogging can do such a thing, but it needs to be blogging in a constructive way. Ranting, whining, and just posting news aren’t really what I have any interest in. There are tons, upon tons, of new sites for video games, anime, manga, music, etc. You name it, and I bet I can find 3+ major sites for it. I never set out to compete with news blogging, usually only posting news that directly interested me.

I want to blog about the things I enjoy, lately a majority of it being video games, but at the same time attempting to help others and learn more. I am not a very social person, so writing blog posts as if I where talking to an audience truly helps. It has also helped my writing skills immensely, and it has shown in my papers in college so far.

The only way to focus the blog is to continually write, and I will eventually find that focus through constant self-evaluation and reflection.

This “refocus” will lead to an eventual re-branding of the website entirely. I want to better develop my graphic design skills along with CSS layouts. This word press blog will be the perfect opportunity for that.

Peaceful Respite will now be my sanctuary for learning , teaching, reflecting, growing, and researching about all of the different things I am interested in. I strongly believe in sharing and helping others, and Peaceful Respite is the perfect opportunity for that.

2010 Last.fm Stats!

Some new artists appeared in the top 20 this year, but The Pillows & Bright Eyes usually reign supreme.

It is, as usual, a mix of indie-rock and Japanese rock/pop. It is a nice variety, and there is always something for every mood!

On the song front, I definitely overplayed Renai Circulation. :D

Okay, so here are all the stats from the WordPress 2010 in review email for Peaceful Respite. It is definitely pretty positive, so that’s always refreshing.
I’ve been busier than usual in 2010, and I think I lost a lot of time for blogging, but I’ll reflect back on that in my big 2010 post.
Look forward to it. ;)
